Stop the Hong Kong/NZ Free Trade Agreement

THE GLOBALIZERS ARE FIGHTING BACK

New Zealand’s Labour Alliance Government, supported by National, has begun secret talks with Hong Kong about new Free Trade arrangements.  Last year it signed a free trade and investment deal with Singapore without allowing public review.   Unless we fight back, the government will force another destructive free trade agreement on us.

Creating multilateral and bilateral free trade agreements is the new strategy adopted by globalizers in response to vocal opposition to the World Trade Organization, the IMF and World Bank.  Under this “globalization by stealth” strategy, transnational corporations impose their neoliberal agenda a few countries at a time, weaving a global web of free markets.

What is a free trade and investment deal with Hong Kong likely to mean?

Ø  No tariffs ever on imports from Hong Kong (and China), eg. clothing and textiles

Ø  No ‘Buy New Zealand’ policy by central or local government, unless Hong Kong (and China) suppliers gets equal treatment for contracts worth $125,000 or more

Ø  No vetting of almost any foreign investment under $50 million from Hong Kong (and China and any other company that sets up in Hong Kong)

Ø  No regulation or government decision that reduces the value of those investments without full compensation, however good the reason (this rule already exists).

Ø  No right to favour local suppliers of services like banking, tertiary education, environmental services or limit who can supply those services.
